Lambda Phi

During highschool the one thing I was positive I would never do is join a sorority. In highschool I had this image in my head that sorority girls were flakey and spent all their time partying with fraternity brothers. At my freshman orientation for St. John's University I was introduced to a group of girls that were part of Lambda Phi and right away I knew my image of sorority girls had been so wrong. When school started I decided to pledge and through pledging I met some of my best friends and I became a part of a bond more sacred then I could of ever imagined. My sorority, Lambda Phi has become so much more than just my friends, they have become my support system and my family when Im away from home. Whether its needing help in a class, someone to go out with, or a shoulder to cry on I know I can rely on my sisters to stick by my side if I were to ever need anything. I love how each sister is unique in their own way and everyone has something different to offer. Of course my sorority has parties from time to time but we also very active in other activites at St. John's. My sisters and I are very dedicated to performing community service and raising money for our charity Maury's Camp. We also are very involved when it comes to our academics and keeping our Sorority GPA above a 3.5. Deciding to pledge for Lambda Phi was one of the best decisions I've ever made because it's something I'll be apart of for the rest of my life.

Did any of your former schools have a writing center?

The high school that I went to had a writing center but like it was said in "vision quest" it was "located in the dustiest, gloomiest corners" of my school. The writing center at my highschool was so hidden that I didn't even discover it until my senior year. The writing center that was in my high school is nothing like the one here at St. Johns. Instead of having qualified consultants to help me write my paper I had teachers on their lunch breaks and students who were in AP English classes that just corrected my grammar mistakes. I am really impressed by the writing center here at St. Johns and all the money and effort they put into creating it.

When writing school assignments, where do you prefer to do your work?

When it comes to writing a school assignment I could never just have one spot where I feel at my best ability to write. Where I sit down to work on my writing depends on what type of topic I'm writing about. If it is a formal writing like a research paper I prefer to work in a library or a more formal setting. If I have to write a paper that focuses on facts and analyzing articles being in a library or a place with little distraction makes it easier for me to stay focused. Its easier for me to write a more serious and proficient paper when Im working in a more formal atmosphere. When it comes to sitting down and working on a more informal type of writing I prefer to work in a more comfortable atmosphere. If I have to write about a more personal topic that requires a lot of my own thoughts and opinions I really like to be in my own room on my bed. It is easier for me to write about a more personal topic in my room because my room is a place where I feel relaxed and where I can be more creative. If I want to be able to write to the best of my ability I need to be able to write in a place that will inspire me to write about what ever topic I am given.

My name is Kathryn Campofelice. My first name, Kathryn was given to me by my mother. My mother actually named me after the character Kathryn Scarlett O'Hara in the movie "Gone With the Wind" which was her favorite movie and book of all time. It took a while for her to decide between the two names Kathryn and Scarlett. She chose Kathryn because she loved the name Katie and she was 100% Irish and my very Italian father gave my other three siblings very Italian names so she wanted her heritage to be shown somewhere in our family. When my great great grandfather Francis Ochello immigrated to America from Sicily he forgot to bring his birth certificate with him so they wrote down the name of the town he was from del' Campofelice as his last name. Though Campofelice wasnt his real last name it stuck and carried down the line to my father today. So my last name actually comes from the town that my ancestors are from. Katie is short for Kathryn which is of Greek origin. Kathryn comes from the word katharos which means pure and signifies chasity and innocence. My last name Campofelice in Italian means happy field.
